Kaʻu, Big Island Hawaii

Exploring The Southern Most Part Of The USA

Kaʻū is the southernmost district of Hawai’i County located on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. The name given to the area by the ancient Hawaiians translates as “wind-blown” due to the area having trade winds all-year long that blow across the area, resulting in exceptionally beautiful weather, clear blue skies and the best air quality in the world as measured by the NOAA station at the observatory on Mauna Loa. Sugar cane was a large crop until 1996. Now coffee is growing in importance, with the Kaʻū Coffee Festival held in Pāhala each year.

Kaʻū was one of the six original districts of ancient Hawaii on the island, known as moku. It includes the areas of South Point (Ka Lae), Hawaiian Ocean View Estates (HOVE), Hawaiian Ocean View-Ranchos (HOVR), now together known as Ocean View, Nīnole, Waiʻōhinu, Naʻālehu and Pāhala. The  Kaʻū district contains much of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, including the volcanoes Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, and Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, Papakōlea (Green Sand) Beach and Kamilo Beach. To the east of Kaʻū is the Puna District, and to the west is the South Kona District.

ATV driving and riding is a physical activity similar to riding a bicycle/motorcycle. Poor vision, physical injuries/limitations, severe illness or medications that impair your ability to drive safely should be considered before booking your tour. Drivers must be 18+ years of age, able to sign a liability release and complete a very brief safety training session on the day of the tour. All passengers must be 8+ years of age, able to physically ride (and hold on) as a passenger as well as sign a liability release. Those under 18 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian sign and consent on their behalf. All instructions, paperwork and information is given in English only.

We provide open-air helmets with straps that fit all sizes, anti-dust googles for eye protection that fit over most eye glasses/sun glasses as well as a pair of gloves if desired. We also have dust masks available as trail riding can be very dusty. Due to the tropical weather and high UV here in Hawaii, we recommend you wear sunscreen/sunblock of SPF 30+, especially on your neck, arms and legs. We do not provide earplugs or ear protection as you must be able to hear instruction given by the guide.

Wear closed-toe shoes (tennis shoes, hiking boots…etc), open-toe footwear such as slippers or flip-flops is not acceptable footwear for this activity. T-shirt and shorts are OK and you may wear swimwear underneath if desired. Trail riding is very dirty and as such your clothes will become very dirty, so having a second change of clothing to change into after the tour is ideal. It is recommended that you bring beach towels, hats, or other small items, the ATVs have storage for your use. We do not provide towels or clothing for the tour.

“Highlight of our trip! We love the outdoors and got to see an incredible amount of the landscape that we wouldn’t have been able to see otherwise. Jerry has a wealth of knowledge about the area and its history – we learned a lot on the excursion as well. Highly recommend this tour!!”
